When baby elephants in South Africa get angry, tourists stay in the car.pink

The story of the VW Polo encountering the elephant’s playful but destructive behavior is quite remarkable and highlights the unpredictable interactions that can occur in wildlife settings. Here’s a summary of the events:

In Pilanesburg National Park in South Africa, Armand Grobler, a field guide and lodge manager, captured astonishing images of an elephant rubbing itself against a VW Polo, causing significant damage to the vehicle. Armand explained that the elephant was likely in a state of Musth, characterized by heightened testosterone levels, which can make male elephants more aggressive.

Despite the elephant’s condition, it displayed no signs of aggression toward the car’s occupants and seemed to be in a playful mood while relieving an itch. Elephants commonly use objects like logs and trees to scratch themselves or remove parasites, and in this case, the car happened to be within reach.

Witnessing the incident, Armand and others in the vehicle felt a mix of adrenaline, fear, and helplessness as they watched the car being damaged. Fortunately, the two occupants of the car, a male and female in their late 20s or early 30s, were not physically harmed but were understandably shaken and in shock.

The VW Polo, however, sustained severe damage, including smashed windows, a badly dented roof, blown tires, and a broken chassis. Despite the chaos caused by its actions, the elephant continued on its way, seemingly unaware of the impact it had on the vehicle.

This story serves as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of wildlife encounters, even in protected natural areas. It also underscores the importance of respecting wildlife and maintaining a safe distance to prevent such incidents. Fortunately, in this case, the human occupants escaped serious injury, albeit with a memorable and likely unforgettable experience.
