In a small village, a couple who primarily engage in agriculture to support their livelihood found joy and challenges in raising their children. Despite the difficulties of managing a large family, their days were filled with the joyful laughter of their children. However, a series of tragedies has tested the resilience of Mr. Thang, the husband and father who recently entered his 40s.
Nearly two years ago, Thang’s wife became pregnant with their fourth child. The anticipation of their son’s birth was shared by their entire family and relatives. However, the birth brought shock and sadness. Their newborn son, Tran The Da, was born with his umbilical cord still attached and had unusual pigmentation, causing his skin to appear completely black. Diagnosed with a giant pigment loss, baby Da required numerous surgeries.
Despite his unusual appearance, Da thrived under the love and care of his parents. By 20 months old, he was taking his first steps and learning to talk. Yet, just as Da began to call his parents, tragedy struck again. Thang’s wife became pregnant with their fifth child. Though aware of the challenges, they decided to keep the child, holding onto hope and love for their growing family.
However, when Thang’s wife was seven months pregnant, she suddenly fell ill. Despite being rushed to the emergency room, she succumbed to circulatory arrest, and their unborn child could not be saved. The loss devastated Thang, who was left to care for their four young children alone. The nights were filled with the cries of his children missing their mother, and Thang comforted baby Da with gentle reassurances.
As if this pain wasn’t enough, mid-September brought another calamity. Thang’s second daughter nearly drowned but was fortunately rescued and taken to the hospital for emergency treatment. Holding his 20-month-old son and seeing his daughter in recovery, Thang felt an overwhelming sense of despair and questioned the fairness of life.
Despite the unimaginable hardships, Thang continues to face each day with courage, driven by the love for his children and the hope for a better future.
