Photos of a strange creature have been circulating around Facebook after the mysterious “alien-like” being washed up on a beach in Australia, perplexing scientists and beachgoers alike.
The unusual sea creature, described as a gelatinous pink blob, was photographed by Damien Said just north of Hervey Bay in Queensland. The environmental conservation organization SCF Australia posted images of the mottled pink and white sea creature on Facebook, asking, “Can anyone ID this?” alongside three images of the translucent jellyfish-like creature.
One of the photographs was taken next to the photographer’s foot to demonstrate the enormous size of the sea creature, highlighting its unusual and large appearance.
Many social media users were baffled by the creature’s ‘alien’ features, but some speculated that it could be a type of nudibranch, or sea slug. Nudibranchs are bottom-dwelling invertebrates with over 2,000 known species.
One person commented, “This is a hooded nudibranch of the genus Melibe. What an amazing animal!” However, another follower expressed concern for the photographer’s safety, writing, “Why would you place your foot near it? It might sting you.”
According to Yahoo News, experts at the Australian Museum have seen the images and are working to identify the species. A citizen scientist also identified the creature as a hooded nudibranch of the genus Melibe.
The mysterious creature’s discovery has intrigued many and underscores the vast and still largely unexplored diversity of marine life.
