The first healthy baby was born to a 72-year-old woman who breastfed

Seventy-year-old Jivunben Rabari from the western Gujarat state in India has fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a mother. Jivunben recently gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Lalo, conceived via IVF. This marks the first child for Jivunben and her 55-year-old husband, Maldhari, after 45 years of marriage and decades of hoping to have children.

Despite not having an identification document to verify her age, Jivunben claims to be 70 years old, making her one of the oldest first-time mothers in the world. The couple’s doctor, Naresh Bhanushali, mentioned that Jivunben and Maldhari were very determined to have a child through IVF, even though they were cautioned about the risks due to Jivunben’s advanced age.

Dr. Bhanushali recounted the initial hesitation to proceed with the treatment but eventually decided to move forward due to the couple’s persistence. “This case is the rarest of rare. It is a miracle to see a woman giving birth without any complication,” he said.

Before starting the IVF process, several preparatory steps were necessary. They regulated Jivunben’s menstrual cycle with oral medication and widened her uterus, which had shrunk due to menopause. The IVF process involved fertilizing her eggs, creating a blastocyst, and transferring it to her uterus. Remarkably, Jivunben conceived on the first attempt.

Baby Lalo

Jivunben’s pregnancy was carefully monitored. After eight months, due to high blood pressure, the baby was delivered via Caesarean section. The procedure involved a team of doctors, including a cardiologist and a physician, to manage any potential complications arising from her age. Both Jivunben and baby Lalo are healthy and back home, with the medical team continuously following up on their case.

Jivunben’s story is extraordinary but not unique. In 2019, 74-year-old Mangayamma Yaramati from Andhra Pradesh, India, gave birth to healthy twin girls through IVF. Leading IVF doctor Kamini Patel advises that IVF is generally not suitable for women over 52 years old due to the high risks involved, including significant strain on the heart and other organs during pregnancy. While there are no formal regulations in some countries, including India and South Africa, clinics often set their own age limits for IVF treatments.

Jivunben’s case, driven by emotional and moral grounds, underscores the complex considerations and risks of advanced-age pregnancies, despite the incredible advancements in reproductive technology.
