Russia’s Military Aircraft Debut at the Dubai Airshow

At the Dubai Airshow, Russia showcased a range of advanced military aircraft, marking a significant presence with innovative models and technological prowess. Unlike traditional Western-centric airshows like Paris Air Show or Farnborough, Dubai offers a platform for both Eastern and Western aircraft manufacturers, highlighting Russia’s strategic advancements in aerospace.

Sukhoi Su-75 Checkmate

The Sukhoi Su-75 Checkmate made its international debut (as a model) at the Dubai Airshow 2021, after being unveiled at the MAKS 2021 airshow in Moscow. The Su-75 Checkmate is designed as an affordable, lightweight, and advanced fighter jet, bringing 21st-century aerospace technology to operators who cannot access or afford top-tier 5th or 6th generation aircraft like the F-35, J-20, or Su-57. According to a Rostec official, the Checkmate has garnered significant interest abroad, making the Emirates an excellent platform for its presentation.

Key Features:

  • Advanced Avionics: The Su-75 is equipped with sophisticated avionics, including state-of-the-art radar systems, sensor fusion technology, and enhanced situational awareness capabilities.
  • AESA Radar: The Active Electronically Scanned Array radar allows the aircraft to detect and track multiple targets simultaneously.
  • Operational Flexibility: With its exceptional range, speed, and payload capacity, the Su-75 can counter modern air defense systems and perform various combat roles effectively.

Mi-28NE “Night Hunter”

The Mi-28NE attack helicopter, an export modification of the “Night Hunter,” was showcased both in static exposition and flight programs. Making its international debut, the Mi-28NE demonstrated its combat capability and survivability through aerobatics at minimal altitudes and speeds.

Key Features:

  • Combat Versatility: The Mi-28NE is designed for reconnaissance and attack missions, capable of defeating main battle tanks, armored vehicles, infantry, and low-speed air targets.
  • Survivability: It operates day and night under adverse weather conditions, with a small visual signature and partly armored fuselage to withstand battle damage.
  • Maneuverability: The helicopter’s powerful engine and unique rotor design allow complex aerobatics, essential for combat scenarios.

Ka-52 Alligator

The Ka-52 Alligator reconnaissance and attack helicopter also made its debut in Dubai. Initially deployed by the Russian Navy and now operated by the Egyptian Navy, the Ka-52 features a coaxial rotor design suitable for operations on landing decks and below deck hangars of ships.

Key Features:

  • Low Signature: The helicopter maintains a low visual and acoustic signature, with an integral electronic protection system and active countermeasures.
  • Coaxial Rotor System: This design provides quick and precise maneuvering, essential for naval operations.

The Ka-226T, a modernized version of the Ka-226, was presented at the Dubai Airshow, featuring refined design and improved aerodynamics. It uses lightweight materials, a new rotor hub, blades, main gearbox, and a crashworthy impact-resistant fuel system.

Key Features:

  • High Altitude Operations: The helicopter is dubbed “Climber” for its ability to operate at high altitudes.
  • Digital Design Documentation: The Ka-226T is the first helicopter in Russia to be manufactured using digital design documentation, reducing build time and accelerating flight tests.

The Mi-171A2, a heavy multipurpose helicopter, made its debut in the Middle East at the Dubai Airshow. The aircraft will be handed over to its first UAE operator post-exhibition.

Key Features:

  • Enhanced Performance: It features more powerful and efficient engines, a main rotor with composite blades of improved aerodynamics, an X-shaped tail rotor, new avionics, and an improved automatic control system.

The Dubai Airshow 2021 highlighted Russia’s advancements in military aviation, with models like the Sukhoi Su-75 Checkmate, Mi-28NE “Night Hunter,” Ka-52 Alligator, Ka-226T, and Mi-171A2 showcasing cutting-edge technology and versatility. These aircraft demonstrate Russia’s strategic commitment to advancing its aerospace capabilities and expanding its influence in global defense markets.
