General Dynamics Land Systems delivers the first M10 Booker combat vehicle to the US

General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) has announced the delivery of the first M10 Booker Combat Vehicles to the U.S. Army. This delivery marks a significant milestone in the development and deployment of the M10 Booker, an assault vehicle designed for the Army’s Infantry Brigade Combat Teams (IBCTs). The M10 Booker is engineered to rapidly traverse various terrains, engage and destroy enemy combatants, and neutralize bunkers, machine gun positions, fortifications, and armored combat vehicles.

How The Army's New M10 Booker Light Tank Will Actually Be Used

Development and Production

The M10 Booker originated from the GDLS Griffin II armored fighting vehicle, which won the U.S. Army’s Mobile Protected Firepower (MPF) program in June 2022. The Griffin II itself is a derivative of the ASCOD family of armored fighting vehicles. The M10 Booker was officially designated in June 2023, named in honor of Staff Sgt. Stevon A. Booker and Pvt. Robert D. Booker.

The initial contract for the M10 Booker includes 96 vehicles in the low-rate initial production (LRIP) phase, with deliveries supporting government testing and logistics. The first deliveries were completed by the end of 2023.

Design and Features

The M10 Booker employs a four-person crew and incorporates several advanced features, including:

  • An enhanced thermal viewer for improved target acquisition and engagement.
  • A large-caliber 105 mm M35 tank gun with low recoil.
  • A lightweight hull and turret, contributing to the vehicle’s agility.
  • A modern diesel engine, transmission, and suspension system.
  • The vehicle is designed with future capability upgrades in mind, allowing for enhancements based on operational needs.

Operational Use

While some military officers and defense media refer to the M10 Booker as a light tank due to its design and appearance, Army officials connected to the MPF program consider this classification incorrect. Weighing approximately 42 tons, the M10 Booker is intended to function primarily as an assault gun, providing mobile protected firepower to IBCTs.

Live Fire Demonstration and Dedication Ceremony

A significant event in the M10 Booker’s introduction was a live fire demonstration of its 105 mm caliber low-recoil tank gun. This demonstration took place during the M10 Booker Dedication Ceremony at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland on April 18, 2024. This event showcased the vehicle’s firepower and marked the official dedication of the M10 Booker.

Statements and Future Prospects

Gordon Stein, vice president and general manager for U.S. operations at General Dynamics Land Systems, expressed pride in the vehicle’s design and its dedication to American heroes. He highlighted the improvements and lessons incorporated from the Middle Tier Acquisition phase, emphasizing confidence in the vehicle’s utility for soldiers in completing their missions.

The M10 Booker represents a significant advancement in the U.S. Army’s armored capabilities, offering enhanced firepower, mobility, and adaptability for future upgrades. As the vehicles undergo further testing and integration into IBCTs, they are expected to play a crucial role in modern combat scenarios, ensuring that U.S. soldiers have the necessary tools to succeed in their missions.
