The medical team at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston informed the family that Hope would need an additional eight weeks to heal from the operation that separated their liver, diaphragm, and part of their heart.

“This is the moment it all feels real,” said Jill. “Our family is eternally thankful for the doctors, nurses, child life specialists, physical therapists, and many others at Texas Children’s who took incredible care of our precious girls.”

Anna Grace and Hope Elizabeth Richards were born attached at the chest in December 2016 and underwent separation surgery in January. Anna was discharged on March 2, while Hope was discharged on Wednesday.

Hope, who spent 482 days in the hospital, was all smiles on Wednesday as she left the hospital with the assistance of her parents and staff members.

Jill Richards expressed the family’s joy at having the girls home in North Texas with their father Michael and brothers Seth and Collin.

The twins were born attached at the chest and abdomen on December 29, 2016, sharing a liver, diaphragm, and part of a heart. The parents were aware long before the birth that their daughters would be conjoined, as an ultrasound revealed they were thoraco-omphalopagus twins, meaning they shared large portions of their torsos.

After being delivered by cesarean section at over 35 weeks, weighing a combined nine pounds 12 ounces, Anna and Hope were kept in the hospital to assess their strengths and the vital organs they shared. The family could not be certain until after their birth that their daughters could ever live life apart.
